Never Summer's The West has the same Ripsaw camber-rocker profile as the Proto Type Two (also tested), but is a much more aggressive ride.
The West has a more set back stance and performs well in powder with effortless float. It is also a real mountain slayer when let loose, but does need an aggressive style. It is a directional board and great for speed, handling groomers and uneven terrain with equal ease. Of course, being directional, it is not for those who like to switch ride a lot.
Turn initiation is also fast but The West seems slightly more catchy than the Proto Type Two. But, once those edges lock in you can really craft out those carves.
The West has mid flex and, thanks to the camber, generates plenty of pop for ollies and gaining air time, and is also reliable and solid on landing those kickers. But, it is not playful enough for chilled afternoons messing about the slopes with butters, spins, side hitters and presses. It is a beast that needs to be let loose on the mountain.
If you like nothing more than speeding down groomers and smashing the hell out of anything that comes your way when heading off-piste then The West is for you. If you want a more playful and forgiving board, then you may prefer the Proto Type Two.
