The Edge jacket by Quiksilver is a beefy insulator, giving the impression of an expedition suit, but with a little more freeride style! And, as far as we're aware, nothing to do with U2's guitarist.
The insulation is the major factor here; Primaloft Silver ThermoPlume and Black Eco are liberally applied to the torso - slightly less so in the arms, which could use a little more - this is super-warm! Warm enough that you could mistake it for down, were it not for the inevitable extra weight. The actual weight is not available from Quiksilver, and while it's not a superlight belay jacket, it's perfectly packable given the warmth it provides.
One thing to bear in mind with warm jackets is the cut - sized too big and that fancy Primaloft doesn't get a chance to work. Quiksilver describe The Edge as having "a slimmer athletic cut that moves with you as you carve." In my experience, the medium sized jacket was enormous, so it's definitely worth sizing down.
Another element of cut is the placement of the Primaloft. It focuses on the torso and the whole area over the shoulders has a kind of 'empty' look to it as a result, since the baffles bulge out from armpit level and below. Strangely the jacket still has a definite smartness about it, with fairly angular shoulders. This makes a good case for using it as an all round winter coat.
15K/10K waterproofing/breathability round out the tech, and although those figures aren't particularly high, they are appropriate to the jacket. The Edge is made for frigid conditions, where breathability is the last of your worries and you shouldn't be getting wet as any precipitation would be cold snow.
This is a great jacket - well thought-out and well executed - but better techy options are available at the price. That said, the style is not only desirable in its own right, but adds versatility and therefore value.
