Fischer's wider brother, the Motive 95, won our ski of the year award last winter so we simply had to test and review the 86mm version in 2015.
As expected, they suit the marked sloped areas more than they do any kind of freeride orientated terrain - but saying that, they are versatile enough to use in the powder when it's there and in any other kind of variable terrain (moguls, chopped up snow, spring snow) they are in their element.
The Fischer brochure says 60% off-piste and 40% on-piste but we'd suggest you'd be happy playing on groomed slopes all day on these with the 95 version better if your focus is on the powder.
The 'Air Carbon' wood core construction with double Titanal shell gives the ski a solid feel with good torsional strength, without the weight getting out of control. Edge grip and control is very good and they seem equally content performing both short and long radius turns. They are also not phased at higher speeds but turn very easily at lower ones.
The Motive 86 is a go anywhere, ski it all, extremely versatile all mountain piece of kit suiting a huge range of ability levels - for aspiring skiers who are starting to explore all terrain skiing but want that on-piste tool for groomed slopes to instructors who require the ultimate work tool for teaching beginners to blasting through the powder after a lesson.
