snow sculpture Ischgl AustriaSnow sculptures are appearing around Ischgl, Austria, as 10 pairs of artists take part in a competition. The snow sculpture competition, ‘Shapes in White’, is being held between 7-11 January 2013, though the unique artworks will remain in place until they melt in the spring.

The annual competition is now in its 20th year, and this time has the theme of Volkswagen – the car company is sponsoring the contest. Each artist team is given a 4m pile of snow, courtesy of the piste-grooming machines, with which to create their masterpiece.

Several Brits are taking part in the contest. Justin Scott and Nigel Summersgill from Yorkshire, plus London-based team Dieter Faust and Tony Walker, are travelling out to Ischgl to carve out their designs.

For the first time this year, holidaymakers can have their say in the judging and nominate their favourite sculpture.
