This season K2 has added the 88 to its Pinnacle range, which was previously only available in 95, 105 and 118 widths underfoot.
The Pinnacle 88 shares in the same pedigree as its big brothers, with the Konic construction core at the heart of the ski. The USA company uses a blend of wood and metal, in common with many other manufacturers, but has a different approach to blending layers of different materials.
K2 figures that skis are under most pressure during turns, so strengthens the perimeter of the Pinnacle's core with metal. The inner core in turn has mostly lighter materials such as wood, keeping the weight down and aiding skiers in the transition phase of their turn.
Add all that to a decent sidecut (128/88/110) and All-Terrain Rocker and you end up with a ski that is usable in most conditions.
The Pinnacle 88 had a decent grip on-piste and was pretty manoeuvrable in short turns for its width, although tended to flap a little in high-speed longs. Away from groomers the ski had enough float in pockets of soft snow although it turned into a bouncy ride when confronted by crud.
This is a good, solid, all-round all-mountain ski that is a welcome addition to the Pinnacle range, all wrapped up in nice shades of blue. Cruisey bluesy!
