In second place was the Swiss rider Oyston Braten, with local favourite kiwi Jossi Wells coming in third.

A former world champion skier, the freestyle skier Woods was a strong favourite for medal glory in the Sochi Olympics but was held back by an injury he was carrying through the competition – eventually finishing in fifth spot.

However, this early winning start to the 2014/15 season signals he is back on top form and starting down the long road to the 2018 Winter Olympics in the best way possible.

The 22-year-old took the top qualifying place with his very first run and then bettered that with his second run to clinch the New Zealand Freeski Open Champion title.
