soup_festivalIn a novel attempt to garner interest in its ski resort, the tourist office of Turracher Höhe in Austria is running a season-long competition to find the ultimate king or queen of soup, a staple dish for skiers and snowboarders over the winter months.

It’s unclear whether the resulting crown will be soup related, but it’s all part of the Culinary Ski Festival taking place from 23 to 25 March, when not only will the winner be announced, but there will also be a three-day safari of six culinary events across the ski area showcasing regional specialities from Nockberge mountain beef to mountain farm ice cream. The highlight is set to be the multi-course gourmet menu of top chef Philipp Prodinger at the Schlosshotel Seewirt.

Soup fans can vote online for their favourite soup from 16 varieties presented by 13 local restaurants. “There will be 16 different soups – classics as well as more innovative creations,” explained managing director of the tourism association for Turracher Höhe, Cornelia Brandstätter. Flavours include grandma’s potato and speck soup or simple cream of mushroom.

All voters will be entered into a draw to win a two-night stay for two people during the Culinary Ski Festival, and entry to all the events.

Well, the idea of a soup champion got our attention at least.
