Whistler goes green in a massive commitment to sustainability.

Welcome to wonderful Whistler. There are myriad good reasons why the jewel in British Columbia’s mountain crown is the most popular resort in North America. To ski or snowboard here is to follow in the footsteps of the greats – its twin mountains, Whistler and Blackcomb, were home to the 2010 Winter Olympics and Paralympic games. A big favourite with American and international snow seekers alike, the resort itself is a ski and snowboarder’s paradise of three resort villages, an incredible 8000+ acres of ski terrain, over 200 marked trails, 37 ski lifts, 17 restaurants, 269 snow cannons and a historic annual snowfall of 38 feet that is skiable all the way from November to May.

And Whistler isn’t just a pretty face – it’s also leading the field by developing itself into an eco-conscious ski resort. Whistler is dedicated to combating the effects of global warming at a local level as well as future-proofing its winter weather for generations to come, and by skiing and boarding here, you’re part of a message – that the snow sports industry needs to come together and take positive action on climate change to protect the snow we all love.

Whistler has a game plan. In efforts to make its energy consumption neutral, the Fitzsimmons micro hydro renewable energy project got involved by building a local hydro plant on the Fitzsimmons River (between Whistler and Blackcomb mountains) to produce enough electricity to match the total annual energy consumption of the ski resort’s winter and summer operations (that includes a whopping 37 ski lifts, 17 restaurants and 269 snow cannons as well as all other buildings and services).

It’s also becoming a sustainable employer – Whistler Blackcomb has already been named one of Canada’s Greenest Employers, a recognition of a commitment to sustainability and energy,  due to its commitments to using electric vehicles as well as the resorts dedication to achieving zero net emissions, zero waste to landfill and zero impact to forests and habitats by 2030.

And Whistler is encouraging the little green changes all visitors can make, too, be it re-using towels, turning off lights or walking to the slopes. The resort team hopes their commitment to reducing their carbon footprint will show other resorts how to follow suit, and make a real impact for good.

Want to choose a planet-positive ski trip for next winter? For somewhere so clad in white snow, Whistler is as green as they come.
